Working for the Paris Opera Ballet

If I have learned anything as a professional in the arts, it is to expect the unexpected. In April, after months of anticipation, I traveled to Paris to start work as rehearsal director for Édouard Lock as he restaged his sections of Iolanta/The Nucracker for the Paris Opera. I recorded and managed rehearsal videos as Édouard created new material, and I was given the opportunity to coach some of the dancers in the Forêt section of the ballet.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous starting a role like this in the most historic ballet company in the world, but the dancers and staff of the Paris Opera were more welcoming than I could have imagined. You cannot pass anyone in the hallways without saying 'Bonjour'. On top of everything, I was invited to take company class on their raked studio floor, which was a terrifying challenge.

Working at Palais Garnier was one of the most surreal and incredible experiences of my life, and I hope it's one I can recreate someday.

À bientôt, Paris!
